Grants

Our grants are a popular way of supporting graduate students through their education here at UMass Boston.

Professional Development Grant: 

For students seeking funds for travel expenses accrued presenting at or attending academic conferences.  This is a post travel reimbursement program. However, approval occurs prior to travel. Grant amount of up to $400 for presenters and up to $250 for attendees. All conference travel & receipt submission must be completed before June 10th 2016. We ask that requests be made 30 days before travel, therefore the latest deadline for application submission is May 10th.

Research Funding Grant:

For student seeking funds for research that does not otherwise fit the categories of the Spayne Grant, Bollinger Grant, and Professional Development Grant. A faculty member will need to participate in the application process.  This grant cannot be used to defray costs associated with a Master’s final project/thesis, a doctoral dissertation, or conference travel.  This grant worth up to $500.00. Deadline is rolling.

Spayne Grant:

The Dr. Robert W. Spayne Research Grant is a competitive grant awarded to assist students in defraying research expenses associated with a Master’s thesis or final project. Up to three* grants of $1,500.00 (maximum) are awarded each fall and spring semester by a committee of UMass graduate students, faculty and staff.  All graduate students will be notified via email when applications are being accepted each semester.

*Spring 2016 semester only, up to SIX Spayne Grants will be awarded

Application available: Feb 29, 8:00am
Deadline to submit:  Apr 17, 11:45pm

Bollinger Grant:

The Craig R. Bollinger Memorial Research Grant is a competitive grant awarded to assist students in defraying research expenses associated with a doctoral dissertation. Up to three* grants of $1,500.00 (maximum) are awarded each fall and spring semester by a committee of UMass graduate students, faculty and staff.  All graduate students will be notified via email when applications are being accepted each semester.

*Spring 2016 semester only, up to SIX Bollinger Grants will be awarded

Application available: Feb 29, 8:00am
Deadline to submit:  Apr 17, 11:45pm

One-Day Training/Workshop Registration Grant:

Spring 2016 semester only, GSA will subsidize graduate students’ registration fees for one-day trainings or workshops. GSA will fund registration fees up to $500. Requests must be made before the student has registered for the event. Lodging and travel will not be funded. Requests must be made before June 10th, however the training or workshop may take place at any time before September 5th.

If you receive any form of aid from sources other than Financial Aid Services, your aid may be adjusted. Contact our office to determine the impact of outside awards. Examples of other sources of aid include scholarships, Veteran’s Benefits, employee reimbursement and tuition waivers (Massachusetts Rehab, veteran’s state employee, graduate assistantships).

Please note that outside awards includes any money awarded by the Graduate Student Assembly
